First Period

In the Tampa Bay vs St. Louis game tonight, the defense stole the show for both teams right off the bat in the first period. The first was held to a scoreless game with the Lightning goaltender, Andrei Vasilevskiy, stopping 8 shots on goal. The Lightning defense also ended the first period with 14 hits. Comparatively, The Blues goaltender, Jordan Binnington, stopped 15 shots on goal. The Blues defense also got 6 hits in the period and stopped a Lightning power play. With strong defensive plays on both sides, the period ended without a score on the board for either team.

Second Period

Going into the second period, the defensive battle continued on both sides of the ice. Binnington successfully stopped 32 shots on goal by this point in the game and the Blues’ defense had 10 hits by the end of the second. The Lightning, on the other hand, had 23 defensive hits and stopped 3 St. Louis Blues’ power plays. Vasy also stopped a total of 19 shots on goal by this point in the game. Both teams held the second to another scoreless period.

Third Period

The battle continued on in the third. The teams faced yet another period where the game was all defense. With both goalies stopping every shot that came their way, the third ended scoreless, sending the Blues and the Lightning into overtime.

Overtime

Defensive plays and blocks on goals being the main points of the game, this pattern continued into overtime. Shots continued to come as well as continued to be blocked throughout the period. Binnington blocked a total of 39 goals by the end of the game and Vasy blocked a total of 32. The game began to look like we would be heading into a shootout but with less than a minute left in overtime, Brayden Schenn scored a game-winning goal for the St. Louis Blues with Colton Parayko and Vladimir Tarasenko assisting.
