Game Recap: Tampa Bay Lightning VS Pittsburgh Penguins

First Period

The first period of the game was heavily one-sided in favor of the Penguins. They started off with an early first game of the night. Riley Sheahan scored the goal only 3 minutes 25 seconds into the period. Garrett Wilson and Kris Letang assisted on the goal. Phil Kessel scored a second Penguin goal with Bryan Rust and Evgeni Malkin assisting. Less than 20 seconds later, a third Pittsburgh goal was scored by Sidney Crosby. Dominik Simon assisted.

Tension rose between the two teams with many fights breaking out during the game, along with many penalties. 9 minutes into the first, Ryan McDonagh received a penalty for hi-sticking against Patric Hornqvist. Only 26 seconds later, Cedric Paquette for interference against Kris Letang. This left the game at a power play 5 on 3 in favor of the Penguins. However, the Lightning kept the Penguins from scoring and successfully killed both penalties.
End of Period: 3-0 Penguins

Second Period

While scoring wasn’t as high this period, the Penguins continued holding strong against the Lightning. They held the Lightning to another scoreless period. Meanwhile, the Penguins scored a fourth goal just over 6 minutes into the second. Kris Letang scored the fourth Penguin goal of the night, with Phil Kessel and Evgeni Malkin assisting.

Frustration continued, bringing along more penalties in the second. At 1 minute 56 seconds, Evgeni Malkin was called for hooking against J.T. Miller. Brian Dumoulin was then called for roughing against Alex Killorn at 4 minutes and 20 seconds in. Alex Killorn was also simultaneously called for roughing against Brian Dumoulin due to one of the fights of the night.
End of Second Period: 4-0

Third Period

The game came to a scoring standstill in the third with no goals being made by either team throughout most of the period. The Lightning managed to break the shutout with a goal 15 minutes and 50 seconds into the third. The first lightning goal of the night was scored by J.T. Miller. Ryan McDonagh and Alex Killorn assisted. Steven Stamkos scored a second goal for the Lightning. He was assisted by Nikita Kucherov and Victor Hedman.

Fighting continued for both teams into the third. Evgeni Malkin and Steven Stamkos were both called for fighting at 1 minute 40 seconds in. They faced off in a particularly eventful fight. Malkin hit Stamkos with his stick and Stamkos retaliated hitting Malkin with his own stick. Gloves were off as fighting ensued to the point of Stamkos being thrown back onto the ice. Both were penalized, making it a 4 on 4 game. At 6 minutes 36 seconds in, another fight broke out from penalties involving Adam Erne, Cedric Paquette, and Teddy Blueger, ending with two of the players fighting on the ice. Teddy Blueger was penalized with roughing Cedric Paquette. Cedric Paquette was penalized with cross-checking Teddy Blueger. Adam Erne was penalized with roughing Teddy Blueger.
