Both teams went most of the first period without scoring. There was a little under 2 minutes left in the first when one of them finally got a score on the board. The Buffalo Sabres opened up the game with the first score of the night and the only goal in the first period. Rasmus Dahlin scored the first goal with Zach Bogosian and Jack Eichel assisting.

The second brought another low-scoring period. It was about halfway through the second before Nikita Kucherov scored the first Lightning goal of the game and the only goal in the period. He was assisted by Tyler Johnson in tying the game.

The defensive battle was on in the third period. Both teams held firm, keeping both teams from being able to score in the third. This ended the third period on a tie and sent the game to overtime.

With the game heading into overtime, the tension of the battle continued on. Neither defensive line let up in the overtime round, bringing the game down to a shootout. After two successful shootout goals by Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov, the Lightning took the victory for an 8th game win.
