Tampa Bay Lightning VS Columbus Blue Jackets Game 3 Recap
In game 3, the Columbus Blue Jackets won their third consecutive game with a 3-1 victory over Tampa. The Tampa Bay Lightning now face an 0-3 record in the first round of the playoffs. As the Blue Jackets get close to a potential sweep, the Lightning must win the next four games to stay in the playoffs.
The game started off slow with very little action coming from the first period. The Tampa Bay Lightning only had 3 shot attempts in the first. Comparatively, the Blue Jackets ended the period with 12 shots on goal. They also won 59% of the face offs, compared to Tampa’s 41% of the face off wins. While there were no successful goals, Columbus maintained offensive control of the game throughout most of the first. The period came to a close with a tied game of zero.

The second period took a turn for the worse for Tampa. Within the first two minutes of the second, Matt Duchene scored the first goal of the night with Atkinson and Werenski assisting, putting Columbus on the board. Then, Oliver Bjorkstrand scored a power play goal for the Blue Jackets with Jones and Texier assisting on the play. The Lighnting continued to struggle on the face offs at 46%, compared to Columbus’ 54%. They also trailed with 14 shots on goal, behind Columbus’ 22 shots. However, they lead in hits with 31 over the Blue Jackets’ 29 hits. With the Lightning struggling to gain offensive control of the game, they ended the period with a deficit of two goals on the game.
End of the Second Period: 2-0 Columbus Blue Jackets
Heading into the final period of game 3, the Blue Jackets lead the game by two goals. Early on in the period, Ondrej Palat scored the first goal of the night for the Lightning with Cernak and Johnson assisting on the play. Following this, it appeared that the Lightning may be getting some spark back, playing a bit more dominantly than before. However, this was short-lived and would end up being the only goal of the night by Tampa. Then, Cam Atkinson scored the final goal of the night in the last minute of the period with Panarin and Harrington assisting on the play. Ending the game, with another defeat, the Lightning faced an 0-3 defeat for the round and now are one loss away from being eliminated in the playoffs. They will need to win the next 4 games to stay in it this year.
